About us

The CBD Jobs and Skills Hub opened in March 2017 to support pathways for sustainable employment in Auckland's city centre.

The hub team's home base is in Wynyard Quarter and they work across sites in the city centre. The CBD Jobs and Skills Hub works directly with employers in priority sectors to provide a no-cost recruitment service, and to deliver the wrap-around training needed to upskill people, close to their places of work, on a user-pays basis.

The hub is a not for profit collaboration between employers, local and central government, and education and training providers.

Why was the CBD Jobs and Skills Hub set up?

Auckland has a growing demand for workers in the construction sector; with 32,000 jobs that need to be filled over the next few years to deliver the unprecedented level of construction activity in the pipeline. As these projects are completed, vacancies in the tourism, hospitality and retail trade sectors are also catered for by the CBD Jobs and Skills Hub.

There are thousands of vacancies in Auckland’s city centre right now. Auckland is going through a massive ‘growth spurt’, with a number of construction mega-projects underway that are critical for Auckland’s economic growth. These projects include the Wynyard Quarter regeneration, the NZ International Convention Centre build, Commercial Bay, University of Auckland development and the construction of the City Rail Link.

Once these projects are complete, Auckland’s city centre will be home to thousands more residents and commercial businesses - which will in turn employ thousands of highly skilled professionals, and service workers in sectors including tourism, hospitality and retail trade.

Who are involved in the CBD Jobs and Skills Hub?

The hubs are partnerships between employers, central and local government, tertiary providers, and industry training organisations. Involved in the CBD hub are Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Mana Whenua, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Panuku Development Auckland, Ministry of Social Development, SKYCITY, Ministry of Education, Downer-Hawkins, Fletcher Construction, City Rail Link, The Skills Organisation, Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) and Tertiary Education Commission.

Since 2017 the CBD Hub has supported over 100 employers with recruitment and upskilling.

Are there are other Jobs and Skills Hubs?

Yes, there is a jobs and skills hub, Ara, at Auckland Airport and another jobs and skills hub at Tāmaki. Learning and best practice are shared across the CBD, Ara, and Tāmaki hubs.

What sorts of job candidates are you looking for?

Employers are looking for hard-working and energetic people with a range of experience.

If you don’t have any experience, that’s OK. A good attitude goes a long way, and of course the CBD Jobs and Skills Hub offers training to employers wanting to upskill their people and lift productivity.

How do people travel to work the city centre each day?

Job seekers in the construction and hospitality industries generally need to be available to start early each day in the city centre. In construction, daily on-site briefings to start the day are usually held at 7am – so being on-site and ready to work is critical.

Auckland Transport is supporting the hub by promoting a free, two-week trial to candidates that haven’t tried public transport before.

Where public transport is not an option, speak to the hub and prospective employers about transport options – some employers operate mini-vans or arrange car-pooling, for example.

How does the hub support local employers in other sectors?

The hub is geared to respond to employer demand and will work with city centre employers to meet their recruitment and training needs sector by sector, over time.

Employers are looking for people to fill jobs in a variety of sectors, including the marine industry in Wynyard Quarter, and in city centre retail and call centre roles.

Anyone who is a New Zealand citizen or has a NZ resident visa can use the CBD Jobs and Skills Hub.
